heal.abstractContinuous improvement in the quality of educational work and the effectiveness of educational organizations is a necessary condition for the ongoing enhancement of every educational system. Research has demonstrated that evaluation processes in the educational field are a fundamental factor in promoting the improvement of educational organizations at all levels, particularly through the implementation of internal evaluation. Within this framework, in recent years, the evaluation of educational work has been applied in the Greek educational system, primarily through the self-evaluation of school units. Moreover, reviewing the available literature reveals that the role of the principal or head of the school unit significantly impacts the implementation of internal evaluation and, consequently, its effectiveness. Based on the above, this study examines the views of principals and heads of primary schools regarding the role of leadership in the process of self-evaluation of educational work. A quantitative methodological approach was chosen for the research, and convenient sampling was used. Specifically, 92 principals and heads participated in the study, answering closed-ended questions included in an electronic self-administered questionnaire. The results of the research indicated that principals and heads of schools consider self-evaluation an essential tool for improving educational work, as they view it positively. Additionally, based on their statements, they follow all the recommended actions required for the implementation of this evaluation process at all stages. However, they are particularly cautious about publishing the results of the process and involving parents. Furthermore, they emphasize that reducing bureaucracy, increasing available resources, continuous training, creating cooperation networks, and developing participatory leadership will enhance the effectiveness of self-evaluation. Finally, based on the research results, significant variations emerged regarding the demographic and professional characteristics of the sample, which can serve as a starting point for future research.en
