The purpose of the present article is to examine the relation of Christos Fragos, Emeritus Prodessor of ’Pedagogics at the University of Ioannina, to philosophy, and especially to the ancient Greek philosophy. This relation is substantiated on the one hand by the references found in Christos Fragos* works to ancient and modern 'philosophers* opinions which refer to pedagogical and psychological subjects and on the other hand by his study entitled Application of Socrates* obstetric method to children (Ioannina 1973). In this study, which is based on an empirical resarch, Christos Fragos tried to apply the pedagogical method that Socrates used in Plato's dialogue Meno to primary and secondary school students, but to university students as well. Just like Meno’s slave, guided properly by Socrates by questioning, managed to find the solution of a geometrical problem, in the same way the children tested by the Christos Fragos and his research team were able to find the solution of the same geometrical problem, that is the solution of the dubling of the square, using the same exactly method, i.e. Socrates’ obstetric method. It is worthwhile mentioning that the childten tested by Fragos were of a younger age than the age in which, according to J. Piaget and his research team, the children are able to solve the above mentioned problem. With these conclusions Christos Fragos made clear that the Socratic obstetric method can be a part of the modern pedagogical practice. The main conclusion that we can draw is that the Socratic and Platonic and, in general, the ancient Greek philosophy can be serve as a starting point for a fertile and in some cases useful speculation. Christos Fragos utilizes (1976-77) the Socratic model of teaching using it as a basis for the dialectical model.en
