This paper is a small contribution to the important subject of iconoclasm. Our main source is the life and martyrdom of St Stephanos the Younger. This text written by Stephanos, deacon of the Great Church of St Sophia in Constantinople circa 808, represents one of the important sources for the first phase of iconoclasm. In the first part of the paper we examine the reason and the purpose for the composition of the life of St Stephanos. We also refer to the historical circumstances of the life and the great opposition to iconoclasm shown by the Abbot Stephanos. In more detail we refer to the scene of his brutal martyrdom by the iconoclastic mob of Constantinople who carried his dismembered body in the streets of the capital. Then follows the main evidence we possess on the worship in Constantinople during the 8th century and the aggressive actions of the iconoclasts against icons. We finally examine the iconography of St Stephanos the Younger in the Orthodox tradition. He is represented upright among the standing saints on the lower zone of the churches and especially the Katholika of the monasteries. He is holding in his right hand a small icon with the representation of the Virgin with Child or Christ himself; in his left hand he holds an scroll (eiletarion) bearing a untolled text relevant to the worship of icons. We refer to examples of this iconography from Cyprus and Mount Athos.en
