| heal.abstract | Οι έρευνες στον τομέα του καρκίνου που έλαβαν χώρα από τις αρχές του προηγούμενου αιώνα μέχρι τις μέρες μας, αποτέλεσαν και θα συνεχίζουν να αποτελούν μία μάχη ζωής από αφοσιωμένους επιστήμονες που έχουν ως τελικό στόχο την θεραπεία των ασθενών με καρκίνο και την καθυστέρηση της έλευσης του θανάτου. Με την παρούσα διάλεξή μου θα παρουσιάσω τα ιστορικά ορόσημα στη έρευνα του καρκίνου. Η διαλεύκανση της γενετικής βάσης του καρκίνου είναι το αποτέλεσμα της έρευνας που διεξάγεται από τις αρχές του προηγούμενου αιώνα και κορυφώθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια των δεκαετιών 1960 και 1970. Έχει επιτευχθεί μέσω δύο διαφορετικών αλλά συγκλινουσών γραμμών: η πρώτη περιλαμβάνει τη μελέτη ογκογόνων ιών σε τρωκτικά και πτηνά, και η δεύτερη τη χρήση χημικών καρκινογόνων σε κύτταρα ή συστήματα ζωικών μοντέλων (ποντίκια). Η ταυτοποίηση των γονιδίων που παρουσιάζουν μεταλλάξεις, μεταβολές στα επίπεδα έκφρασης και επιγενετικές τροποποιήσεις έχει διευκολυνθεί μέσω της ανάπτυξης ζωικών μοντέλων καρκινογένεσης. Θα ολοκληρώσω την διάλεξή μου παρουσιάζοντάς σας την προσωπική μας ερευνητική προσπάθεια στην έρευνα του καρκίνου που στοχεύει 1) στην αξιολόγηση των καρκινικών βιολογικών δεικτών στη θεραπεία του και 2) στην ανάπτυξη νέων προσεγγίσεων, της κυτταροθεραπείας του καρκίνου με τη βοήθεια των βλαστοκυττάρων. | el |
| heal.abstract | Cancer research that has taken place since the beginning of the last century has been and will continue to be a lifelong battle given by dedicated scientists with the ultimate goal to treat cancer patients and to delay the onset of death. In the present lecture, I will present the historical milestones in cancer research. The elucidation of the genetic basis of cancer is the result of research conducted since the beginning of the last century and culminated during the 1960s and 1970s. It has been achieved through two different, but still converging directions: the first involves the study of oncogenic viruses in rodents and birds, and the second the use of chemical carcinogens in cells or animal models (mice). The identification of genes that bear mutations, alterations in expression levels and/ or epigenetic modifications has been facilitated through the development of animal models of carcinogenesis. I will conclude my lecture by presenting our personal research efforts in the field of cancer research that aims at 1) the evaluation of biomarkers for cancer treatment and 2) the development of new approaches, e.g. cancer cytotherapy based on the use of stem cells. | en |
