The peasant class has a subject of great interest in the study of Folk¬lore (in fact, for many folklorists, it is the only social class of interest). Therefore, in the various folklore theories that have been propounded up to today, one finds that the ideas of rural life and the village occupy a central place. At various times, and depending on the kind of political and social objectives served, peasant life has been depicted by some as the ideal model of life, while the peasant class has been looked upon by others as a force of backwardness and conservatism. The author gives a number of illustrate this. The author observes, however, that rural communities, due to the higher degree of social interrelatedness characteristic of the communities of small size, have succeeded in the past to achieve a remarkable de¬gree of internal stability. And he concludes that the absence of these features in our present-day large communities makes the return of the rural model impossible as a solution to the contemporary social dis¬equilibrium.en
