| heal.abstract | Η Μονή της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Σινά χτίστηκε τον 6ο αιώνα ως βυζαντινό φρούριο, προστατεύοντας τόσο τους μοναχούς όσο και τα λειτουργικά τους αντικείμενα. Η Μονή Σινά χαρακτηρίζεται από την απομακρυσμένη τοποθεσία της, την απομόνωση και τη συνεχή μοναστική ζωή των τελευταίων 15 αιώνων. Οι παράγοντες αυτοί έχουν συμβάλει σημαντικά όχι μόνο στο σχηματισμό μιας ασκητικής πνευματικότητας, αλλά και στη διατήρηση πολύτιμων κειμηλίων. Συγκεκριμένα, η Βιβλιοθήκη του Σινά θεωρείται δεύτερη μετά την Βιβλιοθήκη του Βατικανού σε σπουδαιότητα και αριθμό χειρογράφων. Η απομακρυσμένη τοποθεσία της Μονής έχει προστατεύσει τα χειρόγραφα από πολέμους και λεηλασίες και το ξηρό κλίμα της ερήμου έχει διατηρήσει τα αντικείμενα χάρη στα χαμηλά επίπεδα σχετικής υγρασίας. Η διατριβή αυτή επικεντρώνεται στις φωτογραφικές αποστολές και τα έργα που έλαβαν χώρα εντός των τειχών της Μονής του Σινά μεταξύ του 19ου και του 21ου αιώνα. Η διατριβή χωρίζεται σε δύο κύρια μέρη. Το πρώτο μέρος εξετάζει τις ιστορικές αποστολές μέχρι τη σύγχρονη εποχή (1894-2010). Το δεύτερο μέρος διερευνά τα πιο πρόσφατα έργα ψηφιοποίησης (2011-2021) που περιλαμβάνουν την φασματική φωτογράφιση παλίμψηστων χειρογράφων, την ψηφιοποίηση ολόκληρης της συλλογής χειρογράφων του Σινά, καθώς και μια ξεχασμένη συλλογή γυάλινων πλακών του 20ου αιώνα. Είναι η πρώτη φορά που όλες οι τεκμηριωμένες φωτογραφικές αποστολές χειρογράφων του Σινά διερευνώνται και περιγράφονται σε ένα μέρος. Η ιστορική πτυχή του πρώτου μέρους της διατριβής παρέχει μια πλατφόρμα σύγκρισης και εκπαίδευσης από τις εμπειρίες διαφορετικών αποστολών που πραγματοποιήθηκαν σε διαφορετικές εποχές. Η τεχνική εμβάθυνση του δεύτερους μέρους σε τρία σύγχρονα έργα ψηφιοποίησης, όλα διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους, δίνει μια ευρεία οπτική για το περιεχόμενο των συλλογών της Βιβλιοθήκης του Σινά. Από διαγραμμένα και ξαναγραμμένα κείμενα (παλίμψηστα) μέχρι εύθραυστα χειρόγραφα περγαμηνής και ξεχασμένες γυάλινες φωτογραφικές πλάκες, η Βιβλιοθήκη του Σινά είναι ένα πολύτιμο ερευνητικό κέντρο. Τα τελικά αποτελέσματα της διατριβής προσφέρουν νέες πληροφορίες βασισμένες σε ερευνητικό υλικό που δεν έχει δημοσιευθεί στο παρελθόν και συμβάλλουν στην καλύτερη κατανόηση της ιστορίας της Μονής της Αγίας Αικατερίνης και της Βιβλιοθήκης της. | el |
| heal.abstract | Saint Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai was built in the 6th century as a Byzantine fortress, protecting both the monks and their liturgical artifacts. The Sinai Monastery is characterized by its remoteness, isolation, and continuous monastic life in the last 15 centuries. These factors have greatly contributed not only to the formation of an ascetic spirituality, but also the preservation of treasured relics. Particularly, the Sinai Library is considered as second only to the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in significance and number of manuscripts. The location of the Monastery has protected manuscripts from warfare and pillaging and the dry climate of the desert has preserved the objects in low levels of relative humidity. This dissertation focuses on the photographic expeditions and projects that took place among the walls of the Sinai Monastery between the 19th and the 21st century. Divided in two parts, the first deals with the historical expeditions up to modern times (1894-2010). The second part investigates the most recent digitization projects (2011-2021) that include spectral photography of palimpsests, digitization of the entire Sinai manuscripts collection, and a forgotten 20th-century glass plates collection. This is the first time all documented photographic expeditions of Sinai manuscripts are investigated and described in one place. The historical aspect provides a platform of comparison and education from the experiences of different expeditions through different times. The technical dive into three modern digitization projects, all different from each other, gives a broad perspective on the contents of the Sinai Library collections. From erased and re-written texts to dry fragile parchment manuscripts, and forgotten glass plate photographs, the Sinai Library is a treasured research center. The concluding results of the dissertation offer new information based on research material not published before, and contribute to the better understanding of the history of Saint Catherine’s Monastery and its Library. | en |
