The purpose of this study is to describe, analyze and interpret the interview discourse of university students majoring in history. Focus is on the meaning they attach to the idea of “nation”. The study adopts a social constructionist and interpretative perspective and applies constructs from metaphor and folk theory. The research questions are the following: a) What features do the participants attribute to the Greek nation? b) How is the ‘other’ represented in students’ interview discourse? c) How is history taught at university? d) What functions, according to the students, does history as a subject serves? e) What is the perceived influence of textbook content compared to the teacher’s ? Data collection is based on in-depth interviewing and observation. The sample consisted of nine female and three male university students. The results are analyzed and interpreted within a constructionist conceptual framework. A number of contradictions that emerged from students’ discourse provided further insight into their ‘theories’ of the nation. Among other things, this study found that the nation is presented as an entity on a journey with history being its compass. The implications of the metaphor are explored. The study also suggests that the participants attribute to the Greek nation the characteristic of "uniqueness". On the one hand they seem to perceive the nation as a timeless entity, on the other hand they often seem to mean the opposite, e.g. when they describe it as consisting of two distinct sections (past and present). As concerns the ‘others’, the study provides evidence that they are viewed as a threat because of a trauma that is a remnant of the past. Participants argue that a school where history is not taught would be "empty" and its students just "moving bricks". They also claim that the teacher’s influence, both at school and university, is stronger than the textbook’s. These findings suggest that, in order to improve the teaching and learning of history throughout the educational system, the emphasis should be not so much on the content of history books as on a better initial and in-service teacher training.en
