| heal.abstract | Leo Löwenthal is one of the intellectuals of the first generation of the Frankfurt School. This essay aims on the one hand at the designation of his thought and its connection to the rest of the intellectuals who constituted what was later known as Critical Theory. On the other hand this essay attempts to present Löwenthal’s important contribution to the Studies on Prejudice through his psychoanalytical study False Prophets. Studies on Authoritarianism. The first chapter of this essay presents Löwenthal as a member of the Institut für Sozialforschung of the Frankfurt School. It studies not only the positions Löwenthal possessed but also his responsibilities within the Institute and how they affected his thought. The second chapter presents the two most important elements for the rest of Löwenthal’s essay about agitation: the social malaise and the construction of a fully hostile world. In this chapter Löwenthal’s characterization of agitation as “psychoanalysis in reverse” is brought about along with the defensive mechanisms of the listeners’ psyche which are triggered at the agitation process. The third chapter focuses on the creation of the enemy as surreptitious anti-Semitism. This anti-Semitism is characterized as latent not only within the techniques of the agitator but also within the listeners as elements which seek externalization. The fourth and last chapter presents the self-image of agitator along with the character of his followers as it is constructed by the agitation. Moreover, another of Löwenthal’s texts is being analyzed which may be perceived as his attempt to seek the social elements which manage to create atoms prone to agitation. Löwenthal’s research may not include the listeners’ reactions, an element which is highlighted by him from the beginning, but it is innovative since it opens the field of what later went by the name of discourse analysis within the Political. | en |
| heal.abstract | Ο Leo Löwenthal είναι ένας από τους στοχαστές της πρώτης γενιάς της Σχολής της Φραγκφούρτης. Η παρούσα εργασία στοχεύει αφενός στην ανάδειξη της σκέψης του και της συνολικής συμβολής του έργου του στη συγκρότηση της κλασικής Κριτικής Θεωρίας. Αφετέρου επιχειρεί να παρουσιάσει την πολύ σημαντική συμβολή του στις Μελέτες για την Προκατάληψη (Studies in Prejudice), μέσα από την ψυχαναλυτική εργασία του «Ψευτοπροφήτες. Μελέτες για τον Αυταρχισμό» (“Prophets of Deceit. A Study of the Techniques of the American Agitator”). Το πρώτο κεφάλαιο της εργασίας πραγματεύεται τον Löwenthal ως μέλος του Ινστιτούτου Κοινωνικών Ερευνών της Σχολής της Φραγκφούρτης. Ερευνά τόσο τις θέσεις που κατείχε όσο και τις υποχρεώσεις που είχε αναλάβει στο Ινστιτούτο όπως επίσης σε ποιο βαθμό αυτές επηρέασαν τη σκέψη του. Το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζει τις δύο πιο σημαντικές βάσεις της εργασίας του για τη δημαγωγία, την κοινωνική της βάση και την κατασκευή ενός εχθρικού κόσμου για τους ακροατές. Σε αυτό το κεφάλαιο αναδεικνύονται οι τεχνικές του αγκιτάτορα ως «αντίστροφη ψυχανάλυση» και οι ψυχικοί μηχανισμοί των οπαδών που ενεργοποιούνται για να προσκολληθούν στην προπαγάνδα του. Το τρίτο κεφάλαιο επικεντρώνει στην ανάδειξη της κατασκευής του εχθρού από τον αγκιτάτορα που είναι ο συγκαλυμμένος αντισημιτισμός του. Ο αντισημιτισμός αυτός ενυπάρχει ως λανθάνων και στο ίδιο το κοινό του αγκιτάτορα αναμένοντας την εξωτερίκευσή του. Το τέταρτο και τελευταίο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζει την αυτοεικόνα του αγκιτάτορα, αλλά και τον χαρακτήρα των οπαδών του όπως αυτοί διαμορφώνονται από την ίδια τη δημαγωγία. Επιπλέον, αναλύεται μια ανεπεξέργαστη εργασία του Löwenthal, η οποία μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ως η προσπάθειά του να αναζητήσει την κοινωνική κατάσταση που προετοιμάζει τα άτομα να δεχθούν τη δημαγωγία στη σύγχρονη βιομηχανική καπιταλιστική κοινωνία. Η έρευνα του Löwenthal μπορεί να μην συμπεριλαμβάνει τις αντιδράσεις του κοινού, όπως το αναφέρει και ο ίδιος στον πρόλογο των Μελετών για την Προκατάληψη, αλλά θεωρείται πρωτοποριακή, καθώς άνοιξε το πεδίο της ανάλυσης λόγου σε πολιτικό επίπεδο. | el |
