The purpose of this study is to investigate the educational trajectory of students that have entered the University of Ioannina through the policy of affirmative action. More specifically, this work focuses on the foreign and Cypriots students who enrolled at the University of Ioannina from 2000 to 2010 as belonging to a special category. This study analyzes the institutional framework of the policy of affirmative action in Greece from 1983 till today. These policies are examined through the lense of equality and inequality and discussed in relation to the influence of globalization. Faced with the new challenges posed by an increasingly globalized world, Greek Higher Education had to overcome its traditional insularity and welcome students from other countries, so as to reap the benefits of internationalization. The research sample consists of 962 undergraduate students who gained admission to the University of Ioannina as students of the special categories of “Foreigners” and “Cypriots” and graduated from academic year 2003-2004 to 2014-2015. The data was collected from the data base of the University of Ioannina and converted to SPPS software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The final grades of the students mentioned above are examined in relationship to the variables of citizenship, sex, the department of study, the major, the academic year of registration and academic year of graduation. The analysis was done using statistical methods such as analysis of variance (ANOVA) and T-test. This study brings to light that the girls are up to three times more than boys. The majority of our sample are Cypriot citizens, whereas for many students the citizenship is not known. Few students have Albanian, Russian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Bulgarian and Thai citizenship. The average graduation mark is 6,93 (6,95 for girls and 6,84 for their male colleagues), Both female and male students needed additional semesters in order to complete their studies.en
