heal.abstractΤο σπουδαίο έργο του Ηροδότου και του Θουκυδίδη, των δύο μεγάλων ιστοριογράφων του 5ου αι. π.Χ., επηρεάζει τις κρίσεις μας για τους ιστορικούς του αιώνα που ακολουθεί. Συνήθως τους αντιμετωπίζουμε ως κατώτερους σε σύγκριση με τις δύο αυτές εμβληματικές μορφές και βλέπουμε στο έργο τους την παρακμή του λογοτεχνικού είδους που καθιερώθηκε τον προηγούμενο αιώνα. Στη διάρκεια του 4ου αιώνα όμως το ιστοριογραφικό έργο που παράχθηκε ήταν πλουσιότατο όχι μόνο σε ποσότητα αλλά και σε ποιότητα, έστω κι αν από αυτό σώζεται σε αποσπασματική μορφή ένα πολύ μικρό μέρος του. Νέες υποδιαιρέσεις της ιστορικής γραφής και νέα θέματα δημιουργούν έναν αξιοσημείωτο πλουραλισμό: Περσικά, Ελληνικά, Σικελικά, Ατθίδες, Παγκόσμια Ιστορία και Φιλιππικά διευρύνουν τα όρια της ιστοριογραφίας θεματικά, χρονολογικά και γεωγραφικά. Οι ιστοριογράφοι της εποχής αυτής αξιοποιούν την κληρονομιά του 5ου αιώνα, ταυτόχρονα όμως την αμφισβητούν στην επιλογή των θεμάτων, στην αξιοποίηση των πηγών, στην οργάνωση του υλικού, στον τρόπο με τον οποίο αντιλαμβάνονται την έννοια της αιτιότητας. Στην ιστοριογραφία αποτυπώνονται οι τεράστιες πολιτικές, κοινωνικές αλλαγές και ανακατατάξεις στον ευρύτερο ελληνικό χώρο και στον χώρο της Ανατολής. Ο 4ος αι. π.Χ. είναι η περίοδος καθιέρωσης της ιστοριογραφίας ως διακριτού λογοτεχνικού είδους, ενώ οι νέες τάσεις που εμφανίζονται σε αυτή ανοίγουν τον δρόμο για την ιστορική παραγωγή της ελληνιστικής εποχής.el
heal.abstractOur admiration for the excellent work of Herodotus and Thucydides usually leads us to underestimate the importance of the historiography of the fourth century BC. It is often seen as a decline or at least inferior to the historiography of the 5th century. In fact the fourth century historiography has proved to be innovative and above all influential. The historians of the fourth century continued the legacy of their predecessors but they also created new dimensions and purposes for the following historians. In my thesis, I concentrated on the historians who wrote during the fourth century until Alexander succeeded his father Philip. From Alexander onwards we have significant changes in historiography which are out of the scope of this work and it would be more fruitful for these to be included in a work devoted to Hellenistic Historiography. I examined the work of Ctesias’ Persica, Xenophon’s Hellenica, the Hellenica Oxyrrhyncia (unknown historian), Philistus’ History of Sicily, Atthidographers, Ephorus’ Universal History and Theopompus’ Philippica. My research examined aspects of historiography and it has the following structure: subject and genre, sources and enquiry, narration, causation and the emphasis on morality, tradition and influence, the emphasis on individuals (paradigmatic history) and the political dimension of historiography.en
