heal.abstract | Herbicide residues were detected in water samples from streams and pumping stations of the agricultural area of Thessaloniki during a 1-year period, from March 1988 to February 1989. Highest concentrations were detected during the planting and growing season from May to September. The released amounts of each herbicide were calculated using one collective model dependent on herbicide concentrations on water flow rates and on their changes with time. Herbicides are released from the agricultural fields and transferred to Thermaikos Gulf, through the rivers Axios, Loudias, Aliakmon, draining streams and draining pumping stations on the coast. The percentage of released amounts of commonly used herbicides is 3.4% of Atrazine, 2.5% of Prometryne, 16.9% of 2,4-D, 9.7% of MCPA, 4.7% of Alachlor and 0.5% of Trifluralin; these are carried by surface waters to the Gulf, mainly by the Loudias river. | en |
