heal.abstract | This article discusses the presentation of the heroes in the myths of Pindar and Bacchylides. It is claimed that in Pindar the heroes mai- ntain their heroic attitude; the poet describes in his odes their exploits and refers to their toils. Pindar also emphasises the character (ethos) of a hero by insisting over and over again on the element of choice, and by placing the heroes facing personal dilemmas. He thus presents his heroes as moral exempla (positive or negative). Bacchylides, on the other hand, presents his heroes more humane and focuses on the emotion (pathos). He mainly describes their situation of despair and their misfortunes. This difference can be explained in terms of poetic goals and is closely connected with the perception of the heroes by the audience. More specifically, Pindar intervenes frequently in the mythical narrative and controls the expectations of the audience. In Bacchylides, there is a distance between poet and audience, and the emotional response invited is one of pity for the sufferings of the heroes. | en |
