Byzantine saints come from all levels of the society. The army is no exception and there are famous military saints, such as St. George and St. Theodore, or even protectors of cities, as is the case of St. Demetrios. Nikolaos the Soldier is a neglected second rate saint whose life is connected with historical events, namely the disastrous expedition of 811 of the Emperor Nikephoros I (802-811) who was accompanied by many members of the Byzantine nobility and high-ranking officers of the army, against Kroumos, the leader of the Bulgarians. Nikolaos’ miraculous survival connected with an episode of continence before the battle of 26 July 811 gave the material for a salutary tale intended for reading in the monasteries, especially by the young monks. St. Nikolaos was canonized early (24 December) and his short life was first incorporated in the vita of St. Nikolaos of Stoudion (t 868). In the eleventh century the life appears independently but also in the synaxanum of the Great Church. It survives in a number of manuscripts dated from the eleventh to the eighteenth century scattered today in many libraries from Jerusalem to London and from Mount Athos to Berlin. The text of the synaxanum is given in a more simple language in the later manuscripts. During the sixteenth century and later St. Nikolaos the Soldier became popular and is represented in frescoes among the military saints, especially in the area of Epiros where he is found in a number of monasteries. In this article we edit the text of Nikolaos’ nanatio from a sixteenth- century manuscript in the British Library (Additional 34.554, ff. 14 Γ-1440, which preserves a vernacular text based on the synaxanum. We give a full palaeographical and codicological description of the manuscript and we attempt to follow the manuscript tradition of the text and establish the stemma of the surviving manuscripts. Finally in plates Ι-Π we give two specimens: a) of the actual manuscript (i.e. f. 14 Γ) and b) the representation of the saint of circa 1542 in the monastery of St. Nikolaos Spanos or Philanthropenon on the island of Ioannina.en
