In this paper we have tried to approach the subject of costume as a cultural code in action, within a social reality with a complicated articulation. This means that the clothes are examined as a phenomenon which plays a role in all the levels of social formation. Special emphasis is laid on the clothes as a communication system, as a language with its rules or as a “system of signs” which can be “read” as a text. The clothes denote, especially in the stage of their social circulation and consumption, the way of life of the social groups and classes as well as the limits and the possibilities of the ‘traditional” Greek society. The attention which is paid to the significance of the clothes that people wear and generally to the place of symbolism in everyday life, is due to the fact the traditional societies were assigning - more that ours - to ‘the words and the things” to signify the social status, the wealth and the prestige and moreover to secure the social rise of the individuals. Our final goal is to contribute to the knowledge of the real articulations of the traditional Greek society which is moving within the context of its material life and within the established symbolic order of things.en
