| heal.abstract | The Greeks from the Black Sea who, during the time of the terrible persecution of the Hellenic people of the East (1914-1922) had moved to Russia, suffer new pressures in the eve of the Second World War, this time from the regime of Stalinist Russia and take the road back to their original ancestral homeland. On settling here, they establish new refugee centers along the whole breadth of the Greek land, seeking their incorporation into the Greek State and claiming, for several decades, their rights as described by the treaty of Lausanne. A file of 74 documents, (some original, some copies) covering the time from 24.3.1954 to 1.8.1977, provides useful information on the Black Sea Greeks from Russia who settled at Patras. The file is kept in the archives of the association at Patras. This Association of the Black Sea Greeks “from Russia” at Patras represents a great number of families, numbering 140 in 1954, reaching 210 in 1960 (765 indivi-duals in the second case) and very soon instigates procedures for co-operation with other similar associations, especially the one in Northern Greece. Almost all of the existing correspondence of the association of Patras focuses on two main issues of grave concern for the refugees, which up to 1960 had been unsolved. The one concerns the exemption of the refugees from paying the price of not participating in the military service, while the second refers to their urban and agricultural reestablishment, as they themselves point out in their appeals to the appropriate Departments. In their petitions, the refugees describe their effort for national reinstatement. They describe mainly the indifference of the government towards them. In these texts one can still hear the echo of the tragedy of Asia Minor. The documents also contain additional information on various subjects, which, combined with recent data, can prove invaluable in the study of the refugee situation. | en |
