As far as we know, the first «charitable pawnshop» (Monte di Pieta) in Greece was established by the Knights of St John in 1505 in the capital of their island state, Rhodes. The second was established by the Venetians in Chandax (Iraklio, Crete) much later, in 1613, and was followed by others in Rethymno and on the Ionian Islands. This article publishes for the first time the rules and regulations of the Rhodian Monte di Pieta and the terms that were added or revised eleven years later (1505,1516). The relevant documents are in the Knights’ archive in Malta (National Library of Malta, Arch. 396, f. 192r-195r, and Arch. 404, f. 218r-219r). The writer critically examines the information found in the documents, and discusses the purpose of the establishment, its administrative structure (director, scribe, and two supervising knights), and its mode of operation (how the pawned goods were received and valued, how the loan was made, how the sale by auction was run, how long the Monte operated, its expenses and income, how the interest or the surcharge was levied, how the profits were used). The writer also compares the legislative framework of the Rhodian Monte with the regulations governing similar establishments in other cities. Lastly, he examines, through the operation of a non-profit credit institution, the Knights’ social conscience alongside their realistic commer¬cial and financial acumen.en
