The present article is the result of a thorough study and elaboration of the data which are preserved in the commercial accounts of the papal consul in Corfu, Giovanni Battista, which he sent every three months to the secretary of the Holy See in Rome. Today these accounts are kept in the Arehivio Segreto Vaticano (Scgreteria di Stato Affari Esteri). The almost complete laching of special works on the demographic and economic questions in the Seven Islands during the 19th century-in contrast to the period of Venetian rule-was the main cause for this communication. Additionally the particularities which are noteworthy in the Seven Islands, especially during the first quarter of last century, which are correlated to the mainland during the Greek war of Indepedence, give a special meaning to this effect. As far as demographic evolution is concerned, although most of the elements used on this study may be considered as «incomplete», we may proceed to the following approximate evaluation: 1) The Ionian Islands, with the exception of Paxi and Cefalonia, present a demographic stagnation and 2) in the islands territory, there is no geographic mobility between the country side at the town. In contrast to the demographic stagnation, trade in the Islands continues to present a considerable activity, although that period was not especially blooming in trading. The establishment of the British coinage the cultivation of new agricultural probuct, which partly was the result of the road construction in the country side, the deceaning of grain production, the extension of currant cultivation in Corfu, and finally the positive or negative influence of the Greek Revolution of 1821 on the main exports of the Ionian Islands, are some characteristic examples which presented a different aspect of the up to date image of the Islands economy.en
