The struggles of the Greeks for independence during the Ottoman rule was affected by the intentions of the Great Powers. The Greeks firstly had leaned toward the West, but later, dissapointed, turned towards Russia, with the hope that it was the only force, which could oppose tp Ottoman Empire. Among the relations, which were developed between the Greeks and Russia, we can include the immigration of Greeks to Russia, especially after the Russian-Turkish Wars of 1770 and 1787. It is difficult to fix the exact chronological limits within in which the immigrants from Epirus went to Russia, as well as their number. According to the pertinent bibliography, we can assume that the immigration of the Epirotes began during the 10th century, with the people from Ioannina and Zagori pioneering, and this number was considerable. The immigrants from Epirus were prospering mainly in Moscow, Nizna, Odessa and Saint Petersburg. It is also difficult to define the exact place of their origin. However, the greatest part of these immigrants was from the regions of Ioannina, Zagori, Grammenochoria, Metsovo etc. The most known benefactors from Epirus are the following: George, and Anastassios Gorgolis, Triantaphyllos and John Dobolis, George Theophanis, Constantin and Paul Paschalis, Zosimades, Zois Kaplanis, Rizarides, George and Anastasios Hatzikostas etc. Many of them involved actively in the struggles of the Greek nation and contributed in the financial, intellectual, culture, and social development of Epirus. Indicatively we mention that by their contributions they helped for the building, repairing and preservation of churches; for the foundation, preservation and operation of schools; for granting scholarships and publication of books; for the operation of hospitals, asylums for the poors, orphan’s homes, marriage of poor girls etc. The sum of money, which was donated for the above mentioned put*- · poses it is impossible to be calculated. An approximate estimation can be made, if we convert the rubles in todays Greek drachmas. So we have the following amounts: the amount of 4.263.725 rubles, which calculated that they were the deposits of the Epirotes benefactors in Russia during the middle of the 19th century, corresponds to 293 billion 1985 drachmas. Russia was a hospitable place for the immigrants from Epirus. A number are still buried in the grounds of the historical monastery of Donskoi in Moscow, with the inscriptions in Greek language on their tombe stones.en
