The writer uses hitherto unknown data to conduct a comparative study of the life and work of two eminent Macedonians, who came from the same town, Veria, gained distinction in Europe, lived at the same time (between the late 16th and the first half of the 17th c.), yet never met each other. Metrophanes Kritopoulos and Ioannis Kottounios shared the following ideological characteristics. 1. They were both educated at major European universities and colleges (Oxford, Helmstedt, Altdorf, Tubingen, Padua, and the Greek College in Rome) and embraced the humanistic ideals of the inter-European Respublica Literaria et Christiana. 2. They both preserved their national and religious identity. They adopted a moderate attitude towards their European confreres’ religious disputes and upheld the fundamental principle of the period: that the great house of God has room for many smaller mansions. 3. They both helped to propagate in Europe the lumen ab Oriente of the Orthodox Church; and they also enriched their university teaching with the study and commentary of the works of Aristotle. They both exemplified a spirit of tolerance, for they aspired to resolve problems and achieve peaceful coexistence through dialogue and consensus. The Appendix gives a chronological plan of the two Macedonian scholars' lives, and an account of Kottounios’s funeral in Padua, taken from a rare pamphlet of 1657.en
