| heal.abstract | On the basis of three unpublished Ottoman documents we endeavour to add new information concerning the history of Cyprus in the middle of the 17th century. According to the content of those pocuments, the Christians of Cyprus at that period suffered from lack of drought and from the locusts, which within two years twice destroyed the crops. Additionally, they were permanently oppressed from heavy taxation. In general we may observe that during the first half of the 17th c. the Christians of Cyprus were in a desperate condition, which was also a consequence of the dev§irme. Thus they tried to react dynamically by continuous appeals for help to foreign Christian European Powers or by organising armed revolts. | en |
