The author presents the life of the wisest and the most prolific Greek writer of the 16th - 17th century, namely Leo Allatios. He studied in the Greek College in Rome and then became Custodian of the Vatican Library. The author results in the following after having considered his work and the rich bibliography about him: a. Allatios has always been sentimentally attached to his island of Chios. He managed to provide for his people an educational chance in Rome; he didn't oblige them to declare subjection to the Catholic Church. b. He believed in an approach of both the Orthodox and the Roman Church on equal basis, without any discriminations against any of the Churches. c. The Wise man from Chios has been an optimist throughout his whole life concerning the enlightment of his people. He is fond of a western orientation, while in the same time he preserves his national and religious identity.el
