In this work we endeavour to prescribe the stages of the turcological studies in Greece, or rather of the Ottoman historical studies. However, we additionally gave emphasis to the editions of Turkish-Greek dictionaries and grammars, as well as the methods of learning the Ottoman-Turkish language, where the activity of the Greek scholars of the previous century was more than important. With the same period, i.e. from the beginning of the 19th century until the end of the First World War, we may also note some works about the Ottoman archival sources, books on certain individual subjects, such as the problem of land ownership and further on some attempts were made in writing a general history of the Ottoman state. To the end it is very important that, at that time, the great work of Hammer on the history of the Ottoman Empire was translated into Greek. During the period between the two World Wars we may notice the attempt to approach the Ottoman archival sources from a scientific historical view; however, it is obvious in every similar work the lack of proper acquaintance with the Ottoman studies, while they all, almost, are characterised by an unskilfulness and thorough empiricism. After the Second Wold War the Turcological Studies in Greece took a new dimension both in quantity and quality. A number of specialists on the subject turned their attention to the Ottoman sources concerning the Greek history. They also studied certain historical topics of the period of Ottoman occupation. In this field of study, two main centers were formed in Greece - one in Thessaloniki and the other in Crete. Therefore a serious scientific basis on Turcology is established in Greece, which mainly began in the 1960’s and continues until this day.en
