The author underlines the fact that as far as the Greek communities in Hungary are concerned, there does not as yet exists a complete study in which the history of those settlements and their contribution to the economic and cultural development of the enslaved Greek people are studied. The author further distinguishes four periods in the history of those communities and he describes with great details their composite characteristics, emphasizing the repercussions of the treaties of Karlowitz and Passarowitz in their development. He also evaluates the factors responsible for the preferance shown by the Greek merchants toward Hungary, lists their cities where they settled as well as the commercial enterprises which they developed, always within the context of the Orthodoxe Church. Special reference is made for the Greek schools, the teachers, scholars, benefactors, and the considerable Greco-Vlach of Budapest. At the same time emphasis is laid to publishing activities of the printing Houses of Buda and Peste. Also listed are and various others areas of social activities of the Greeks in those communities. In conclusion the author offers the thesis that the Greek communities of Hungary contributed decisively to the economic and cultural development of their lands of origin and became, there, the nuclei of economic life. They also contributed to the cultural and national awaking of enslaved Greece and looked for ways to ameliorate the status of their compatriots lack home. And it is not accidental that the national awakening under Regas and the Philike Etaireia were bom and extender their first roots among the Greek of Diaspora.en
