The identification of the famous castle Araclovo must be based not only on toponymic but on topographical and archaeological evidence. This small castle was constructed not far from the village Xerochori (Palaeoxerochori of today, near Zacharo, Elis), and on a steep rock. The mediaeval castles of the region which could be identified with Araclovo are Smema, Alvena and Riza. The last one is a small castle, ten minutes distance from Palaeoxerochori. It is doubtful wether Smema can be identified with Araclovo (as A. Bon did) not only because very few topographical elements coincide with those which the chronicle of Morea mentions, but mainly because the names Smema and Araclovo are mentioned in the same mediaeval list of castles. Although the castle of Riza is very small and nearest to Palaeoxerochori, I think that its vulnerability to atttacks from the north side, excludes the possiblility of its identification with Araclovo. The castle of Alvena is the only one where we find almost all the topographical elements that the Chronicle of Morea mentions (a small and strong castle, constructed on a steeprock, easily protected by few soldiers, with many cistemes inside the walls, etc.). On the other hand the toponymy Araclovd (which is mentioned in more recent venitian document) in the region of the village Chryssouli, is not difficult to be identified exactly with the bouig of Araclovo, the settlement which was situated between the walls of the castle of Alvena (Palaeocastro) and the church Panagia.el
