This thesis attempts to examine the gender dimension of space, choosing to focus on three spaces of varying scales, which are traditionally considered male-dominated and, to a large extent, actually function as such: the typical Greek coffee shop, as a semi-public space with strong informal codes of social conduct, the sports field, as a kind of enclosed plaza with a specific protocol for use and behavior; and, finally, the street, as the vital artery of the city and public urban experience. By combining bibliographic re-search with insights drawn from personal observations and empirical readings of space, our essay aims to highlight how these three supposedly “common” and ordinary spaces can serve as illustrative cases of the ways in which gendered norms and inequalities are naturalized and translated in space, and how architectural design, function, and everyday practices are anything but neutral; contributing to the formation or reinforcement of gendered spatial hierarchies among the bodies that ultimately constitute the city.en
