This research paper examines the role of industrial ruins in the contemporary city and investigates how their adaptive reuse can function as a mechanism of urban continuity. Its aim is to highlight the relationship between industrial heritage, collective memory, urban transformation and sustainable development, exploring how abandoned industrial structures can acquire new functions without becoming disconnected from the historical and social identity of their location. The methodology is based on qualitative literature research and a comparative analysis of four cases of adaptive reuse of European industrial heritage: Tate Modern in London, Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross, Matadero Madrid and Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord in Germany. Through the theoretical approaches of Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, Maurice Halbwachs and Walter Benjamin, the research examines the ruin as a carrier of memory and as an active element in the production of urban space. The comparative analysis demonstrates that adaptive reuse is not merely a change of function or the preservation of an existing structure, but a complex process of cultural, social and ecological transformation. At the same time, it highlights both the potential and the limitations of adaptive reuse, as urban regeneration may coexist with social pressures and new forms of inequality. In conclusion, the industrial ruin can function as a carrier of urban continuity when the preservation of memory, contemporary needs and environmental conditions are addressed as interconnected parameters of design.en
