| el |
| heal.abstract | The thesis explores the intricate interrelation between legal rhetoric and narrative storytelling as evinced in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, focusing to the myth of Philomela, Procne, and Tereus (Ov. Met. 6.424–674). By offering a close reading of the legal terminology embedded in the text, the research seeks to provide an innovative inter-pretation of the Latin narrative. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology that combines perspectives from legal studies and literary analysis, the study aims to de-cipher the legal jargon and situate it within its literary context in order to demon-strate that the utilization of legal vocabulary is not merely a lexical choice, but a narratological index that shapes both the narratological structure and ethical recep-tion of the myth. Chapter I examines the strategic employment of legal terminology to establish explicit agreements among Tereus, Procne, and Pandion. It further dis-cusses how the narrative perspective, conveyed in legal terminology, foreshadows Philomela’s legal appropriation, sexual violence and glossectomy by Tereus. Chapter II analyses the redefinition of threats and Philomela’s creation of a tapestry as a ju-ridical substitute for legal denunciation, combining elements of art and law. It also attempts to investigate the revenge strategy employed by Philomela and Procne read as both a legal and a gendered transgression which ultimately results in the legal erasure of the characters’ identities, including Tereus. The thesis thus contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between law and literature, while also underscoring the inherent ambiguity within Ovid’s verse. | en |
