| heal.abstract | Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή διερευνά συστηματικά τον ρόλο των συναισθημάτων αγάπης στη σχέση φροντίδας, εστιάζοντας στη συνάφειά τους με την επαγγελματική εξουθένωση και την ψυχική ανθεκτικότητα των επαγγελματιών υγείας, καθώς και στη σημασία τους για την ποιότητα της κλινικής φροντίδας. Αντλώντας από ένα ευρύ φάσμα θεωρητικών παραδόσεων και εμπειρικών προσεγγίσεων, η διατριβή προσεγγίζει την ανθρωπιστική αγάπη όχι ως ιδιωτικό συναίσθημα ή ηθική αυτονόητη αξία, αλλά ως δομικό, σχεσιακό και οντολογικό στοιχείο της φροντίδας. Παρά τη διαχρονική παρουσία της αγάπης στη φιλοσοφική, θεολογική και ψυχολογική σκέψη, στον επιστημονικό λόγο της υγείας η αγάπη συχνά παραμένει υποθεωρημένη ή αποσιωπημένη. Η φροντίδα τείνει να οργανώνεται κυρίως ως τεχνική παρέμβαση και λειτουργική αποτελεσματικότητα, ενώ η συναισθηματική και σχεσιακή της διάσταση αντιμετωπίζεται ως δευτερεύουσα ή εν δυνάμει αποσταθεροποιητική. Η παρούσα διατριβή αναδεικνύει ότι αυτή η επιστημολογική σιωπή έχει ουσιαστικές συνέπειες τόσο για την ποιότητα της φροντίδας όσο και για την ψυχική αντοχή των επαγγελματιών υγείας. Στο Γενικό Μέρος, η διατριβή επιχειρεί μια εκτενή θεωρητική χαρτογράφηση της ανθρωπιστικής αγάπης, αντλώντας από τη φιλοσοφική και ηθική σκέψη, τη θεολογική παράδοση, την ανθρωπιστική και ψυχοδυναμική ψυχολογία, καθώς και από τις επιστήμες φροντίδας (caring sciences). Η αγάπη προσεγγίζεται ως στάση σχέσης που αναγνωρίζει την ευαλωτότητα, το όριο και την ετερότητα του Άλλου, χωρίς να εξιδανικεύει τη φροντίδα ή να την ταυτίζει με την αυτοθυσία. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται στη διάκριση της ανθρωπιστικής αγάπης από άλλες μορφές αγάπης (έρωτας, φιλία, προσκόλληση), καθώς και στη σημασία της αγάπης ως τρόπου παρουσίας και όχι ως εργαλείου παρέμβασης. Η φροντίδα αναλύεται ως πράξη και σχέση, ως συνάντηση δύο υποκειμένων μέσα σε ασύμμετρες συνθήκες πόνου, ανάγκης και ευθύνης. Από φαινομενολογική και ηθική σκοπιά, η σχέση φροντίδας συγκροτείται ως χώρος νοήματος, όπου η ανθρώπινη παρουσία προηγείται της τεχνικής πράξης. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η ανθρωπιστική αγάπη δεν καταργεί το όριο ούτε υπόσχεται άρση του πόνου, αλλά επιτρέπει την παραμονή απέναντι στην ευαλωτότητα με αντοχή και υπευθυνότητα. Η διατριβή αναδεικνύει ότι η απουσία εννοιολογικής επεξεργασίας της αγάπης στη φροντίδα συνδέεται άμεσα με φαινόμενα επαγγελματικής εξουθένωσης. Η συναισθηματική εξάντληση, η αποπροσωποποίηση και η απώλεια νοήματος δεν ερμηνεύονται αποκλειστικά ως ατομικά ελλείμματα αντοχής, αλλά ως ενδείξεις μιας βαθύτερης ρήξης στη σχέση φροντίδας. Σε ψυχοδυναμικό επίπεδο, η αποστασιοποίηση και ο κυνισμός νοούνται ως αμυντικές διεργασίες απέναντι στην αδυναμία επεξεργασίας του πόνου, της απώλειας και της ματαίωσης, ιδιαίτερα σε περιβάλλοντα όπου απουσιάζουν θεσμικά και συμβολικά πλαίσια στήριξης. Στο Ειδικό Μέρος, η διατριβή αναπτύσσεται μέσα από τρεις αλληλοσυμπληρούμενες ερευνητικές ενότητες. Η πρώτη ερευνητική ενότητα αφορά συστηματική βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση διεθνών μελετών που εξετάζουν την ανθρωπιστική αγάπη στην κλινική φροντίδα και τα ψυχοκοινωνικά της αποτελέσματα. Η ανάλυση αναδεικνύει τόσο την εννοιολογική ασάφεια που χαρακτηρίζει τον όρο όσο και τα σταθερά ευρήματα που συνδέουν την αγάπη με μειωμένα επίπεδα επαγγελματικής εξουθένωσης, αυξημένη επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση και βελτιωμένη ποιότητα φροντίδας. Η δεύτερη ερευνητική ενότητα διερευνά, μέσω ποσοτικής μεθοδολογίας και ανάλυσης διαδρομών, τη συνδυαστική επίδραση της αγάπης, της συμπόνιας και των χαρακτηριστικών της προσωπικότητας στην επαγγελματική εξουθένωση νοσηλευτών/τριών που εργάζονται στην Ελλάδα. Τα ευρήματα καταδεικνύουν ότι τα συναισθήματα αγάπης και συμπόνιας δε λειτουργούν μονοσήμαντα ως προστατευτικοί παράγοντες, αλλά αποκτούν διαφορετική σημασία ανάλογα με τον τρόπο που ενσωματώνονται στη σχέση φροντίδας και τα όρια που τα συνοδεύουν. Η υπερεμπλοκή και η απουσία ορίων συσχετίζονται με αυξημένο κίνδυνο εξουθένωσης, ενώ η ώριμη σχεσιακή στάση συνδέεται με αυξημένη ψυχική ανθεκτικότητα. Η τρίτη ερευνητική ενότητα εστιάζει στη συμβολική αναπαράσταση της αγάπης και της φροντίδας από τους/τις νοσηλευτές/τριες, διερευνώντας λεκτικούς συνειρμούς, μεταφορές και συμβολικές εικόνες. Η ανάλυση αναδεικνύει ότι οι τρόποι με τους οποίους οι επαγγελματίες υγείας νοηματοδοτούν την αγάπη σχετίζονται άμεσα με την επαγγελματική τους εμπειρία, τα επίπεδα εξουθένωσης και την ψυχική τους ανθεκτικότητα, προσφέροντας μια βαθύτερη κατανόηση του βιωμένου νοήματος της φροντίδας. Συνολικά, η διατριβή προτείνει την ανάπτυξη ενός νέου θεωρητικού πλαισίου που εντάσσει την ανθρωπιστική αγάπη στις δεξιότητες φροντίδας ως ώριμη σχεσιακή ικανότητα. Η αγάπη προσεγγίζεται ως ικανότητα παραμονής μέσα στη σχέση χωρίς κατάρρευση ή αποπροσωποποίηση, ως στάση που επιτρέπει την εγγύτητα χωρίς απώλεια ορίων και την απόσταση χωρίς συναισθηματική αποκοπή. Το προτεινόμενο πλαίσιο φιλοδοξεί να συμβάλει τόσο στη θεωρητική κατανόηση της φροντίδας όσο και στη διαμόρφωση εκπαιδευτικών και κλινικών πρακτικών που προστατεύουν τον επαγγελματία και διατηρούν τη φροντίδα ως βιώσιμη, ανθρώπινη και ηθικά θεμελιωμένη σχέση. | el |
| heal.abstract | The present doctoral dissertation systematically investigates the role of love-related emotions within the caregiving relationship, focusing on their association with professional burnout and psychological resilience among healthcare professionals, as well as their significance for the quality of clinical care. Drawing upon a broad range of theoretical traditions and empirical approaches, the dissertation conceptualizes humanitarian love not as a private emotion or a self-evident moral value, but as a structural, relational, and ontological component of care. Despite its enduring presence in philosophical, theological, and psychological thought, love remains under-theorized and often marginalized within health sciences discourse. Care is predominantly organized as a technical intervention oriented toward efficiency and measurable outcomes, while its emotional and relational dimensions are frequently regarded as secondary or potentially destabilizing. This epistemological silence has substantial implications, both for the quality of care and for the psychological well-being of healthcare professionals. The present dissertation argues that the exclusion of love from scientific conceptualization contributes to the erosion of meaning within caregiving practices and increases vulnerability to professional burnout. In the General Part, the dissertation undertakes an extensive theoretical mapping of humanitarian love, drawing from philosophy, ethics, theology, humanistic and psychodynamic psychology, as well as the caring sciences. Love is approached as a relational stance that acknowledges vulnerability, limits, and alterity, rather than as emotional excess or self-sacrificial idealization. Particular emphasis is placed on distinguishing humanitarian love from other forms of love—such as eros, friendship, or attachment—and on understanding love as a mode of presence rather than an interventionary tool. Care is analyzed as both act and relationship: a meeting between two subjects within asymmetrical conditions of suffering, need, and responsibility. From a phenomenological and ethical perspective, the caregiving relationship constitutes a space of meaning in which human presence precedes technical action. Within this framework, humanitarian love does not promise the elimination of suffering, nor does it abolish boundaries; instead, it enables sustained presence in the face of vulnerability, grounded in responsibility and endurance. The dissertation further demonstrates that the absence of a coherent conceptualization of love in care is closely linked to professional burnout. Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and loss of meaning are interpreted not merely as individual deficits in resilience, but as manifestations of a deeper rupture within the caregiving relationship. From a psychodynamic perspective, emotional distancing and cynicism are understood as defensive responses to unprocessed exposure to pain, loss, and frustration—particularly in institutional contexts lacking symbolic and relational containment. The Special Part of the dissertation comprises three complementary research units. The first unit consists of a systematic review of international studies examining humanitarian love in clinical care and its psychosocial outcomes. The findings highlight both conceptual ambiguity surrounding the term and consistent evidence linking love-related dimensions of care to reduced burnout, increased professional satisfaction, and improved care quality. The second research unit employs quantitative methodology and path analysis to investigate the combined effects of love, compassion, and personality traits on burnout among nurses working in Greece. The results indicate that love and compassion do not function as uniformly protective factors; rather, their impact depends on how they are integrated into caregiving relationships and whether they are accompanied by psychological and relational boundaries. Emotional over-involvement and boundary diffusion are associated with increased burnout risk, whereas mature relational engagement is linked to enhanced psychological resilience. The third research unit explores the symbolic representations of love and care among nurses through verbal associations, metaphors, and symbolic imagery. The analysis reveals that the ways in which healthcare professionals symbolically construct love are closely related to their professional experiences, levels of burnout, and resilience, offering deeper insight into the lived meaning of caregiving. Overall, the dissertation proposes the development of a new theoretical framework that integrates humanitarian love into caregiving competencies as a mature relational capacity. Love is conceptualized as the capacity to remain in relationship without collapse or depersonalization, enabling closeness without loss of boundaries and distance without emotional withdrawal. This framework aims to contribute both to theoretical understanding and to the development of educational and clinical practices that protect healthcare professionals while sustaining care as a viable, humane, and ethically grounded relationship. | en |
