| heal.abstract | Διαθέτει πράγματι ο άνθρωπος μια χαρακτηριστική σχεδιαστική ευφυΐα; Πόση σχέση έχει ο σχεδιασμός με την επιβίωση; Τι σημαίνει ότι ένα πλάσμα είναι ανθεκτικό; Κάνοντας ένα βήμα πίσω από την αγωνία για έναν πλανήτη που βρίσκεται σε περιβαλλοντική κρίση, σκοπός αυτής της εργασίας δεν είναι να επισημάνει τη σημαντικότητα του «βιώσιμου» σχεδιασμού, ούτε να κινδυνολογήσει για τις σεισμικές δονήσεις μιας επικείμενης οικολογικής καταστροφής από πλαστικά απόβλητα. Αν και ο προβληματισμός που διατρέχει την εργασία δεν αρνείται με κανέναν τρόπο την κρισιμότητα της εν λόγω συνθήκης, αυτό στο οποίο επικεντρώνεται η προβληματική αυτής της έρευνας είναι οι σχέσεις που λανθάνουν πίσω από τη σημερινή κατάσταση και οι οποίες τη συνδιαμορφώνουν. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, τα «Πλαστικά Πλάσματα» αναδύονται μέσα από μια απόπειρα να εξερευνηθεί ο βαθύτερος δεσμός ανάμεσα στον σχεδιασμό και στον περίπλοκο σχηματισμό της ύπαρξης, του εαυτού, του εκάστοτε ζωντανού οργανισμού. Η εργασία συντίθεται από προσωπικές σημειώσεις, σκέψεις και παρατηρήσεις, τη μελέτη σύγχρονων έργων από τον ευρύτερο χώρο των φυσικών και των ανθρωπιστικών επιστημών, την ανασκόπηση επιλεγμένων ιστορικών γεγονότων, καθώς και από εικόνες, πρωτότυπες ή ανασυρμένες από βιβλία και το διαδίκτυο. Η υπόθεση εργασίας, τα ερωτήματα και τα επιχειρήματά της αναπτύσσονται σταδιακά, μέσα από επιμέρους ενότητες που ακολουθούν τη μορφή μιας σπονδυλωτής αφήγησης η οποία περιστρέφεται γύρω από την έννοια του σχεδιασμού. Στο πλαίσιο της εργασίας, η έννοια αυτή (design) δεν αναφέρεται σε μια αμιγώς ανθρωπογενή δημιουργική διαδικασία, όπως συνηθίζουμε να τη χρησιμοποιούμε. Αλλά διευρύνεται ερμηνευτικά, για να περιγράψει ευρύτερα τον θεμελιώδη, γενεσιουργό και ρυθμιστικό μηχανισμό ο οποίος διαμόρφωσε και συνεχίζει να διαμορφώνει την επιφάνεια της Γης, από την περίοδο της ανοξυγονικής, προ-φωτοσυνθετικής εποχής δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια πριν έως και τη σύγχρονη τεχνολογική συνθήκη. Με αυτό ως βασικό σημείο θεώρησης, τα «Πλαστικά Πλάσματα» επιθυμούν να αναδείξουν τη συμβολή ή ίσως τον καθοριστικό ρόλο του σχεδιασμού στις σύνθετες διεργασίες και στους πολλαπλούς τρόπους με τους οποίους οι έμβιες, ανθρώπινες ή μη ανθρώπινες, οντότητες συνάπτουν σχέσεις και παίρνουν θέση μέσα στον κόσμο. Εάν οι άνθρωποι δεν είναι πράγματι οι μόνοι που «σχεδιάζουν», γιατί η δική μας στάση μοιάζει να υπερέχει αυτής των άλλων οργανισμών; Είναι ο σχεδιασμός η μυστηριώδης αρχή που χάραξε την πορεία του ανθρώπου και κατάφερε να εξημερώσει την άγρια φύση του, ως μια υπόσχεση ευημερίας και πολιτισμού; Ή μήπως, τελικά, αποτελεί μια οντολογική, αναπόδραστα διυποκειμενική διαδικασία, της οποίας η πρωταρχική υπόσχεση ήταν πάντοτε ένας κόσμος που δύναται να υπόσχεται συνεχώς; | el |
| heal.abstract | Are humans the only designers in the world? What does design have to do with survival? What does it mean for a creature to be resilient? Taking a step back from the collective anxiety about a planet undergoing an environmental crisis, the purpose of this thesis is not to highlight the importance of “sustainable” design, nor to raise the alarm about an impending ecological disaster due to plastic waste. Although the overall concern that runs throughout the essay by no means denies the critical nature of the given circumstances, this research focuses on the relationships that underlie these current conditions and which more or less shape them. In this way, "Plastic Creatures" emerges from an attempt to explore the deeper connection between design and the complex formation of existence ―of the self― of each living organism. My thesis consists of personal notes, thoughts, and observations, the study of contemporary literature from the broader field of the natural and the human sciences, a review of selected historical events, as well as images, either original or drawn from the internet. Its premise, reasoning, questions and arguments gradually unfold through individual episodes that follow the form of a modular narrative revolving around the concept of design. Within the essay’s context, the notion of design as a purely human-induced creative process is, fundamentally, challenged; in fact, seen through a broader lens, it comes to describe the fundamental, generative and conditioning mechanism that has shaped the Earth's surface since the anoxygenic, pre-photosynthetic times billions of years ago up to the present technological condition. From this vantage point, “Plastic Creatures” thus aims to highlight the contribution, or perhaps the decisive role, of design in the complex processes and diverse ways in which living, human and non-human, entities relate and position themselves in the world. If humans are not, in fact, the only ones who "design", why does our stance seem to stand out from other beings? Is design the enigmatic authority that has determined the course of humanity and managed to tame its wild nature, as a promise of prosperity and culture? Or is it ultimately an ontological, inevitably inter-subjective process, whose primary promise has always been a world that can ceaselessly keep on promising? | en |
