The history of social life in Ioannina from the last years of the Ottoman Empire to the beginnings of the Second World War follows the military-political developments and is largely shaped by the changes and transformations that took place during this period in all aspects of private and public life. The recreation centers, clubs, theatres, cinemas, the anniversaries and religious celebrations, the festivals, "teas" and ballrooms, the lectures and cultural events are considered as manifestations of sociality in the historical context of the period in question. The transition from a multi-ethnic empire to a national state had as its main consequence the disconnection of the region from important centers of influence and from societies with which it showed cultural cohesion and continuity. Also, the departure of most of the Muslim population, as well as a significant part of the Jewish population, resulted in a change in the cultural identity and character of the city, a process that was reinforced by the arrival of the refugees from Asia Minor, as well as people from other regions of Greece. The main concern of the bourgeois -initially- class of Ioannina, as early as the Ottoman period, was cultural -but also more broadly- Europeanization. However, the social conditions and business activity of the next period will allow for its gradual realisation. The formation of the middle class, which took place quite rapidly under the new establishment, brought the demand for Europeanisation back to the fore and contributed to its wider acceptance. The older, indigenous forms of entertainment and socialising were not eliminated, but they were transformed and redefined in the following period. Additionally, the cultural ferments that took place in the area throughout the investigated period left their traces through music and folk tradition, which remains, to a large extent, alive to this day.en
