heal.abstractIn this paper we draw our attention on the issue of pay of work in a Greek Tobacco Industry, “ Matsagos Tobacco Industry”, between 1910-1972. How much money male and female workers earned and in which way they were paid, as well as which factors determined and shaped the level of the remuneration are the main questions we are going to deal with. To examine these issues, we have selected directly relevant material from the firm ’s archive: staff records, employee cards, labour union records, board of director records, technical compositions and payrolls. In Matsagos Tobacco Industry the gender division of labour was clear throughout of its operation. There was a clear differentiation concerning the relationship of m en and women with the technology and the roles they assumed in the labour process. The well-paid jobs were very few and concerned a small part of the male workforce. The wage ceiling was formed to a great extent on the basis of the hierarchy that emerged from the specialties. The employees with technical knowledge were the most skilled in the factory and besides their higher wages they wielded significant power over those m en and women who were dependent on their knowledge. In contrast, those who lacked special technical knowledge were occupied in jobs that on the whole were considered auxiliary and secondary and were paid lower. Female labour was paid much lower than male. It is indicative that even the best-paid female wage was lower than the lowest male wage. As far as female labour was concerned, it could be argued that it was not homogeneous. There were contrasts in its interior, concerning the kind of labour, the particular specialties and the salary levels. Finally, it was quite more economical and profitable for the enterprise to pay high wages to a few directors, consultants and mechanics whereas the vast majority of the workforce -that is female workers- were restricted to strictly repetitive work, were semiskilled or unskilled, being paid much lower. In this context, the em ployers’ practices concerning the control o f the labour process were intersected with gender notions about technology.en
