The excavation, initially of rescue character (1976-1981) and subsequently systematic (1995-2005) at the site of Dourouti within the campus of the Uni¬versity of Ioannina, brought to light an ancient cemetery and architectural remains which can be assigned to a Thesmophorion. The present article offers a detailed discussion of the results of these excava¬tions, focusing on the Thesmophorion, composed of the North and South Complex. The cemetery and the grave offerings of its graves are discussed in close relation to the Thesmophorion. It represents an important sanctuary dedicated to Demeter, the first to be found in the area of the Ioannina basin, which operated from the early seventh until the end of the third quarter of the fourth century BC. The sanctuary operated in the centre of Hellopia, later Molossia, and it seems that it was originally consecrated to the worship of a pre-Hellenic female deity of a chthonic nature, later identified with Demeter. The establishment of buildings at the sanctuary of Dourouti in the early fourth century BC can be associated with the reforms of king Tharypas and the in¬tegration of the old rural worship into the official Molossian religion. The establishment of a sanctuary of Demeter and the related cult is closely associated with the cultivation of cereals at the site of Dourouti, the most suitable in the basin of Ioannina for such a use.en
