heal.abstractΟ Κάρολος Μαρτέλος και ο Λέων Γ΄ καταφέραν να αναδειχθούν σε δύο σπουδαίους ηγεμόνες, που συνέδεσαν τα ονόματά τους με τη σωτηρία της Ευρώπης από την αραβική εξάπλωση. Ο παραλληλισμός των βίων τους αναδεικνύει χαρακτηριστικά που όφειλε να έχει μια προσωπικότητα, ώστε να καταφέρει να διακριθεί μεταξύ των κορυφαίων των Μέσων Χρόνων, να ταυτιστεί στη συνέχεια με τη σωτηρία της Ευρώπης από τους Άραβες, να εξυμνηθεί από τις μεταγενέστερες πηγές και να εξιδανικευτεί από τη σύγχρονη βιβλιογραφία. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία γίνεται μια προσπάθεια να αναζητηθούν κοινά χαρακτηριστικά των δύο ανδρών, όπως επίσης ανάλογα βιώματα αλλά και μεταξύ τους διαφορές, ώστε να εκτιμηθεί το μέγεθος της συμβολής τους στη σωτηρία της Ευρώπης από την αραβική εξάπλωση. Επιπλέον αξιολογείτε η διάδοχη κατάσταση που άφησαν ως κληροδότημα στους απογόνους τους και γίνεται μια προσπάθεια να ερμηνευθούν τα πραγματικά αίτια της διακοπής της επέκτασης του Χαλιφάτου και των μεταβολών στη διεξαγωγή του Ιερού Πολέμου.el
heal.abstractCharles Martel and Leo III managed to emerge as two prominent rulers, linking their names with the salvation of Europe from Arab expansion. The parallelism in their lives highlights the qualities a personality needed to stand out among the leading figures of the Middle Ages, to later become associated with the salvation of Europe from the Arabs, to be praised by later sources, and to be idealized by modern literature. In this thesis, an effort is made to explore the common characteristics of these two men, as well as their shared experiences and their differences, to evaluate the extent of their contribution to the salvation of Europe from Arab expansion. Furthermore, the legacy they left to their successors is assessed, along with an attempt to interpret the true causes of the halt in the Caliphate's expansion and the changes in the conduct of the Holy War.en
