heal.abstract | The title of my intervention might very well have been the title of the film which provides the reason for the meeting, as this is what happens in Incep¬tion. A futuristic pharmacology allows a team of “dream invaders” to implant a specific idea in the mind of the heir to a business empire, so that, when he wakes up, he will act in a way that will shape things in the real world to the benefit of an underdog competitor. Dreams are the products of brain activity. Prominent philosophers and scientists have drawn parallels between the brain and its function and the latest technologies of their eras; Descartes to hy¬draulic systems, Leibniz to a factory, more recent ones to a computer! A spectacular omission from what was written regarding the director’s sources of inspiration was Ursula Le Guin’s 1971 novel, The Lathe of Heaven. In it, a psychoanalyst who realises that his patient’s dreams affect the wak¬ing world starts manipulating those dreams to make himself the ruler of the planet. An even more impressive oversight, I believe, is the plot’s similarities to Kurosawa’s 1954 film, The Seven Samurai; a veteran is recruiting able fighters to accomplish a war goal, and each fighter also having to deal with their own demons. The “dream invaders” are similar in personality and the same in number as the Samurai: Dom Cob, Arthur, Eames, Ariadne, Yusuf, Mr. Saito and Nash. In addition, their mission: instead of a Japanese village of peaceful farmers, they have to protect a more traditional business empire from a more powerful one. | en |
