| el |
heal.abstract | The symbolic manipulation of Christian salvation through the deposition of meaning in a declarative representation of death, which sometimes refers to the dead and sometimes symbolizes death personified, is probably connected with the migration from the art of the West to the orthodox East of the macabre element. Images that represent a violent injury to the body or an ossified condition (skeleton) delimit the possibilities of the body of the Christian subject, so that the latter is a substrate for the manifestation of a symbolic meaning, but also a field for undertaking practices with the aim of taming the impulses of the material body. Although Merciless Grace remains the depiction of a heterogeneous to the orthodox tradition of meaning death, as it represents a reality of a different order, nevertheless, its use is intended as an objectification of fragility that involves a metaphysical event of common origin and acceptance for both cultural environments, in a psychological intervention in order to suggest the traditional symbolism of the futility of earthly things. We attempt here, starting from the pictorial material of the decomposed body in the post-Byzantine cultural environment, to erase the deepest reflection on their ideological content and their anthropological dimension. The channels of thought will bring back to the fore the late Middle Ages / beginnings of the Renaissance, already formulated by the Roman poet Titus Lucretius Carus (circa 94 BC – circa 53 BC) and the orator and satirist Lucian (125 – 180), problematic of skeletal ossification of the human body. They thus reconstruct, with incredible precision, the thinking of the 1st c. BC – 2nd century A.D. for the management of the body, which either opposes its material exhaustion or agrees with it. The same dilemma of spiritual (anti-materialist) or organic (materialist) management of the body will continue to be posed to the man of Byzantine and post-Byzantine society, whose choices are however dictated by Christian ethics. The latter leaves no doubt that the complete view of life inevitably passes in Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture from the study of death. | en |
