| el |
heal.abstract | Death preoccupied man from the still primitive stage of his life. Death, as a separate characteristic, but also inseparable from human nature, is the second and symmetrically equivalent to life force of the ancient Greek civilization. Philosophy is the study of death, according to Plato in the Phaedo. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the opinions-positions of the ancient Greek literature regarding death and under what conditions its presence is sanctified. Literature was reviewed in books (historical, archaeological), through the internet, and articles from PubMed. Ancient Greek thought and poetry insists on the naturalness of death, "get used to the belief that death is nothing to us, because every evil and every good is found in sensation, and death is exactly the deprivation of sensation", said Epicurus. Plutarch believes in the immortality of the soul and in some version of an afterlife, a belief that stemmed from his initiation into the Dionysian Mysteries, as crystallized in the Fable to Apollonius and the Fable to my wife. Plato believed in the immortality of the soul, while Thales emphasizes that death is no different from life. Death in ancient Greek literature is treated as a natural necessity (birth-death), and is defeated-chosen by submission either to the moral law (the unwritten law, Antigone), or to the written law (Socrates), or to the duty to the country (Epitaph of Pericles, Homer’s epics). The immortality of the soul is the second most important theme of Socratic philosophy. According to Socrates "the soul is the most ancient and divine of all things, to which motion, combined with genesis, supplied eternal existence". | en |
