heal.abstract | In recent years, humanity has been confronted with COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, prompting WHO to declare a pandemic in March 2020. This highly infectious, transmissible and dangerous agent is an RNA virus with a single-stranded RNA genome of positive polarity, whose immediate and timely genomic identification led to the development of reliable and effective vaccines in an extremely short time. Nearly three years after the onset of the pandemic, a substantial percentage of the world's population is immune to infection and/or vaccination. This focused review summarizes the available international research literature on the presence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 following natural infection or vaccination or a combination of both. Concurrently, the general immune response (innate and acquired) following natural infection is reviewed, as well as the immune response to the various vaccine platforms, with a focus on vaccines using mRNA technology. | en |
