heal.abstract | In Kant’s philosophical reflection upon human history, the notions of “Nature” and (divine) “Providence” refer to an entity that leads progressively towards a good final end. In this teleological account of history, Kant often seems to use these two notions interchangeably. However, in his overall body of philosophical work they have very different connotations that prevent their being treated as identical. Thus, if one wants to evaluate Kant’s philosophy of history from a systematic point of view, a clear differentiation between the two notions is necessary. In the present paper, on the basis of some important distinctions in the Critique o f the Power o f Judgment, I attempt to show that in Kant we can find two particular modes of philosophical reflection upon history, a theoretical and a practical one. This double perspective on history then explains why the notions of N ature and Providence cannot be used interchangeably. | en |
