heal.abstractTHE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT IGNATIUS IN THE CHURCH OF AYIA THEODORA IN ARTA. The scene of the martyrdom of Saint Ignatius Theophorus, bishop of A ntioch, is depicted in the church of Ayia Theodora in A rta and is probably dated in the 18th century. The Saint was torn to pieces by the lions in the amphitheatre of Rome in the 2nd century a.C. According to the position of the lions, five iconographical types are formed. The presentation of the martyrdom of Saint Ignatius is frequent in monuments in East and West, in portable icons and engravings from the 14th to the 19th century. The oldest depiction is found in a m iniature of the Menologe of Vasilius II (11th century). It’s remarkable that the scene is illustrated on the north wall of the sanctuary - in the space of Prothesis - in the church of Ayia Theodora and not in the narthex, as usually. Probably, the painter’s preference gives an eucharistic character to the scene.en
