THE ACTS OF THE NOTARY OF THE TOWN OF CORFU NICHOLAS GERASIMOS (1566-1568). The priest Nicholas Gerasimos, as stated in my ledger, was also a notary. He redacted contracts, as follows from the following notation:: Ίερεύς Νικόλαος Γεράσιμος σνμβ/φος πόλεως, συμβόλαια και διαθήκαι άπό 20 Μαιου 1566 έως 21 Οκτωβρίου 1568. He practiced his profession as a notary in the town of Corfu and particularly in the temple of Saint Antony in Spilea, where he apparently exercised his priestly duties, whilst the drafting marriage contracts were redacted in the homes of the parties. His autographed signature as a notary exists in the act 28, where we read Ίερεύς Νικόλας ο Γεράσιμος νοτάριος διμόσιως. The ledger, which is published here for the first time is a part of the archival series “Various Notaries” of the GAK of the prefecture of Corfu and its acts are included in 20 written and numbered sheets, from which the whites are the lOr-v and the 20v. There are totally 68 acts, the majority of which is, contracts (46), proxies (13), transaction (1), testament (1), sharing dowry (1), marriage contracts (3), confession (1), claiming dowry (1) and delegate decision (1). In our acts appear reputable persons of the society of Corfu either as contracting parties or as witnesses, as well as professionals, ordinary people from other places. The family of the notary Gerasimos, is unknown elsewhere. Although the notaries of the 16th century are calligraphers and literate, our notary is misspelling and therefore illegible in many parts, a fact which made it difficult for us during the transcription. The notary Nickolaos Gerasimos is a living example of a scribe of his time. His references to people and objects are valuable sources of his faculty, like all the notary ledgers from which we derive important information for the society of their era, namely: interpersonal relationships, family presence, trade and economy, institutions and habits of the place that reflect the local history with clarity.el
