| heal.abstract | THE LATE PHASE OF THE ALBANIAN NATIONAL AWAKENING. SOME CRUCIAL ISSUES. This paper attempts an approchement of some crucial issues of the Albanian national movement and the role of Albanian intellectuals in the early 20th century. Research is based on an unknown so far primary material, namely the newspaper “A lbanija-Shkipnija e Shkiptarvete”, which was published in Belgrade by the Albanian intellectual Jaschar Sadik Erebar from July 1902 until February 1906. The newspaper’s main purpose, its political views and the national ideas it supported are illuminated in relation to the Balkan historicalpolitical reality in the early 20th century. There are two key themes of the main editorial under analysis: a) the development of the Albanian-Serbian cooperation and friendship, and b) the promotion of the Albanian national movement demands (recognition of Albanian ethnicity, Albanian language, autonomous Albanian political/state entity). D espite its clear national orientation, the newspaper Albanija is not a typical sample of a nationalist newspaper. On a political level, it expresses a strong anti-Turkish spirit, strong criticism of the European politics -especially for the Austrian stances-, fringe ideas, unfulfilled romantic stances, and calls for a supranational inter-Balkan collaboration of the oppressed peoples regardless of their religion. Simultaneously, the publisher’s, Jashar Erebar, political orientation places him among the advocates of the Albanian reform and national independence, as an adversary of the maintenance of the Ottoman status- quo that was against the interest of the Ottoman feudal aristocracy. Ultimately, although Jashar Erebar raises progressive and rational political demands, especially on a cultural basis, he does not refrain from the nationalist rhetoric and the internal contradictions that arise from the complex, ambiguous, and inconsistent character of the Albanian national movement itself. In other words, Erebar reproduces the old vision of creating an autonomous Greater Albania in the territorial and national boundaries of five vilayets, namely that of Kosovo, Bitola, Skodra, Ioannina, and Skopje. | el |
