| heal.abstract | THE TALES OF “THE PEA KING” (AT/ATU 545D*) AND “PUSS IN BOOTS” (AT/ATU 545B): CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS AND NARRATIVE ADAPTATIONS. Oicotype AT/ATU 545D* (The Pea King) is a quite popular narrative in the Greek folktale corpus with thirty-three registered variants. While the plot’s main part is typologically associated with tale type AT/ATU 545B (Puss in Boots), the denouement normally meets the plot of tale type AT/ATU 812 (The Devil’s Riddle) in its Greek context. The three narrative plots interact in the Greek corpus, where the Chick-Pea Master as a human character assimilates anim al-trickster’s qualities: thus, the folktale hero who is initially a fool receives a latent symbolic impact. The paper argues that this unique folktale figure, Chick-Pea Master, has developed inside a restricted cultural area and assimilated symbolic material from distinct genres of oral tradition.
