| el |
heal.abstract | This work examines the speeches of Polydamas and Hector in Book 18 of the Iliad with an emphasis on their structure, the rhetorical ability of the speakers and the nature of their arguments, as well as their narratorial function and their placement within the plot of the above epic. Polydamas' prudent advice (δς έσθλην φράζετο βουλήν) that they withdraw within the walls of Troy is rejected by Hector, who does not realize that he no longer has Zeus' support. On the contrary, Hector's misleading strategic plan (κακά μητιόωντι) to stay out in the Trojan plain and next morning start fighting against the Achaeans, was applauded (κελάδησαν) by the Trojans with divine intervention. The role of the narrator, however, as far as persuasion is concerned, seems to be. very important. It is suggested here that the speeches of the two heroes are plaeed within a very well organized poetie plan that is developed with consis teney, foreshadowing future action that will end to the Fall of Troy itself. Thus, they follow the direetion of the poet and are subjected to the power of his own rhetoric and persuasion, since it appears that the Fall of the city «είναι βεβαία», “is certain”, as the Greek poet K.P. Kavafis declares in his allegorical poem Trojans, according to his Iliadic model. | en |
