The raise and dominance of the “Greek”merchant in the Ottoman commerce is directly related to the development and establishment of the economic and national features of post date-Balkans. Metsovo, an economically rising at the time mountainous area, has contributed to some aspects of this historical process but its role has not been adequately studied. The present study analyses the structural relation ofMetsovo’smuleteers and traders with land commerce during the Ottoman era. At the Ottoman area and especially in Balkans, the transportation of products was mainly carried out by mules. The extent as well as the activities of muleteers highlights their role in land commerce of the time. On these grounds, it seems necessary to reapproachsome aspects of the process that inhabitants of some settlements at Epirus and Macedonia area developed to merchants and traders. However, the lack of relevant evidence still remains a significant obstacle to any attempt on this area. Attaining knowledge regarding the internal reality of the societies studied may indeed help to overcome such obstacle. In this context, studying both muleteers and then tradersfrom Metsovoaddresses research issues relevant to the historical development of muleteers to the constitution of Metsovotraders. These issues capture severalinterrelations of this evolutionary change as well as the lasting presence of the one group that, according to Stoianovich, comprised the world of «the Orthodoxconqueror trader in Balkans». The broad dimensions of thisevolutionary change are evidentin the commercial relations in the world of the Ottoman Empire during the second half of the 18th century.en
