heal.abstractHundreds of important archaeological sites of prehistoric and historic periods have been located in the district of Ioannina since the 19th century, bearing witness to the use of the region from the Stone Age to Late Antiquity. Still, the early phases of this long and dynamic archaeological record are not without gaps. Prehistoric material remains are more prone to decay and re-deposition than the solid structures of the historical periods. This is especially true for the earlier phases of the Palaeolithic and for the Neolithic, periods feebly represented in the archaeological record of the area. Fortunately, inspections, surveys and excavations in the past decade have located new find- spots and sites providing substantial evidence both on the earlier Palaeolithic phases and the Early Holocene period in the region. This article reports on the five new areas with important finds and gives a preliminary ac¬count of the Rapsaioi Middle Palaeolithic open-air location.en
