That the Greeks were ‘speaking Greco-Spanish’ was ironically suggested by Georgios Vlachos, the editor of the Athens monarchist daily newspaper Kathimerini, in April 1931, shortly after the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic. Five years later, in assessing the causes of the Metaxas dictatorship of August 1936, the liberal general Alexandras Mazarakis- Ainian noted that ‘the fear of communism on the part of the Greek middle classes and the events of Spain made many prefer to lose their liberties rather than their money’. The parallels in the historical evolution of Greece and Spain, which Vlachos and Mazarakis-Ainian hinted at, go back several decades. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, economic development in both countries, even if dissimilar in origins, pace and extent, unleashed similar social tensions. Liberal revolutions in 1862 in Greece and in 1868 in Spain led to constitutional monarchies and hopes for genuinely liberal democratic regimes. By the end of the nineteenth century the disappointment of such hopes in both countries led to the politics of stagnation and calls for substantial social, economic and political change. Major military and diplomatic humiliations - in 1897 and 1922 for Greece, in 1898 and 1921 for Spain - rocked the foundations of the old order and strengthened demands for national ‘regeneration’. At first the institution of the monarchy paid the price in both countries: the Second Greek Republic was established in March 1924, with the Second Spanish Republic following in April 1931. Both Republics, as well as democracy itself, were abolished in 1935-1936, with a civil war in Spain and with a dictatorship in Greece. The Greeks were aware of some of those commonalities, therefore the peculiar ‘Greco-Spanish’ language continued to be spoken throughout the 1930s, was largely forgotten during Greece’s occupation in 1941-1944, but it resurfaced during the Greek Civil War of 1946-1949. This paper dissects the ideological connotations of references to the Spanish Civil War in the context of Greece’s historical evolution from 1936 to 1949, when, as an ideological, political and geostrategic precedent, the Spanish experience became a frequent point of reference for Greeks and others.en
