heal.abstractThe “Panathenaia of Sculpture” was an exhibition staged in Athens, in 1965. It was a major cultural event for the country, presenting a linear history of modem sculpture, commencing with Rodin and ending with artists born during the first decade of the 20^ century. Though it was based on well- known artists, they were represented by their more recent production. Responsible for choosing the exhibits were the art critics Tonis Spiteris, Denys Chevalier and Giuseppe Marchiori, the first being the “heart” of the committee. The art works came from institutions, mostly private, and collectors, from many European cities (mainly Paris). It was the first open- air sculpture event presented in Greece. The site chosen was one of peculiar interest and symbolism: the Philoppapos Hill, opposite the Athenian Acropolis. The exhibition was staged by an architect (Giorgos Kandilis), who favored a way of presentation, which encouraged the spectators to “discover” the sculptures in the rocky landscape and the flora of the site. The Greek Tourist Organisation funded the event, an unusual practice for its scope of activities. This paper is focusing on the main aspects of the “Panathenaia”: the works chosen, the way of their presentation, the contribution of foreign museums and collections, the people and the institutions involved and the ideology underlying the project. The source of information was texts published in the Greek press, both by art critics and journalists, and the exhibition catalogue. In a period crucial for orienting cultural choices and exhibition practices in Greece, this event can be used as a case study for tracing the reception attitudes towards modem art and for enlightening us about the Greek cultural stage at the time.en
