In the present review the role of lymph node dissection in association to the prognosis of renal cell carcinoma is discussed in some details. The distribution of lymph node metastases, the extend of the lymph node dissection as well as the relation between histologic type and the incidence of nodal metastases are the points that must be well investigated. Nowdays, it seems that the complete lymph node dissection does not demonstrate any survival benefit over the radical nephrectomy alone.en
