The interaction of UHV cleaved 2H-WS2 crystals with Li deposited at room temperature and at 85 K has been investigated using synchrotron soft x-ray photoemission. Depending on the Li concentration and the temperature, chemically different interfaces are observed: at 85 K, a small Li concentration x less-than-or-equal-to 0.2 leads to an intercalation phase LixWS2, which can be described in terms of the rigid band model. An intermediate phase occurs for 0.2 < x less-than-or-equal-to 1.3. One product of this intermediate phase is assigned to W2S3. With higher Li concentrations, a decomposition reaction sets in producing Li2S and metallic W. This decomposition reaction is favoured by heating the system to 300 K. No intermediate phase is observed in the room temperature experiment. The crystal is directly decomposed producing Li2S and metallic W. The experimental results are discussed in relation to thermodynamic, electronic and kinetic effects.en
