This undergraduate thesis is an extensive literature review focusing on the quarantine bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, its spread in Mediterranean olive groves during the last decade, and the current management and containment strategies applied against it. Xylella fastidiosa is a Gram-negative, xylem-limited bacterium transmitted by xylem-feeding insect vectors and characterized by an exceptionally broad host range, infecting hundreds of cultivated and wild plant species. Its first official detection in Europe occurred in 2013 in Apulia, Italy, where it caused Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (OQDS), leading to the destruction of millions of olive trees and resulting in severe economic, social, and environmental consequences. This thesis presents the historical background of the pathogen, its biological and morphological characteristics, taxonomic classification into subspecies, principal host plants, and geographical distribution in Europe and worldwide. Furthermore, the epidemiology and biological cycle of the bacterium, its transmission pathways, favorable environmental conditions, and the role of insect vectors in disease spread are thoroughly discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact of climate change and Mediterranean climatic conditions on the establishment and expansion of the pathogen across Mediterranean countries. In addition, the study examines the phytosanitary measures and management strategies implemented at both European and national levels, including eradication of infected plants, establishment of buffer and surveillance zones, monitoring and control of insect vectors, agronomic practices, and the use of resistant or tolerant olive cultivars. Finally, recent scientific advances and innovative approaches for the detection, monitoring, and management of the pathogen are reviewed, aiming at the effective limitation of its spread and the sustainable protection of Mediterranean agriculture.en
